Background of the Study
The rapid proliferation of mobile communication in Nigeria has ushered in new forms of language use, particularly in text messaging. SMS language, characterized by syntactic simplification, abbreviation, and non-standard constructions, represents a significant departure from formal language norms (Okeke, 2023). Users often simplify sentence structures to meet character limitations and to facilitate faster communication. This simplification may involve the reduction of subordinate clauses, omission of function words, and the adoption of colloquial syntax. Such linguistic adaptations are not only practical responses to technological constraints but also reflect broader trends in language evolution driven by digital interaction (Ijeoma, 2024). By analyzing SMS corpora, this study aims to document the syntactic patterns prevalent in Nigerian text messaging, highlighting how traditional syntactic structures are modified in the digital realm. This investigation will employ both qualitative and quantitative methods to compare SMS language with more formal written communication, offering insights into the mechanisms of syntactic simplification and their implications for language change (Adeniyi, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread use of SMS language in Nigeria, research on syntactic simplification in text messaging remains limited. Existing studies often concentrate on lexical or phonetic changes, overlooking how sentence structure is systematically simplified to meet digital constraints (Okeke, 2023). This gap impedes a comprehensive understanding of how these syntactic modifications affect communication efficiency and clarity. Furthermore, the potential long-term effects of these simplified structures on formal language skills have not been adequately explored. This study aims to address these deficiencies by providing a detailed comparative analysis of syntactic patterns in Nigerian SMS language, thereby shedding light on the broader implications of digital communication on language evolution (Ijeoma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the evolving nature of language in digital communication. By examining syntactic simplification in SMS language, the research will inform educators and linguists about the impact of digital media on language structure, supporting strategies for preserving formal writing skills while embracing modern communication trends (Okeke, 2023; Adeniyi, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is limited to syntactic simplification in Nigerian SMS language and does not consider other digital communication platforms.
